Bill,
Very accurate observation! I went there once and i DO speak russian, but in no way i felt like a part of the family. I too have been ignored and felt the attitude from the "divas" :) have no desire to go there again. The store looked to me like it crawled straight out of Soviet times and the sales people acted accordingly. So it doesn't really matter whether you speak the language or not. I personally recommend the Golden Grain. As Magan mentioned in her comment the place is clean and the owner is nice and hospitable and always willing to help you find what you need.

Speak Russian? Great! You're one of the family! Don't speak Russian? They you've got pin worms crawling in your eyebrows! Love attitude? Love being ignored? This is your store! If you love being treated like trash by supermodel and diva has-beens then you MUST COME to the Russian General Store.

Great salami, too.

Actually, there is only one Russian General Store in Houston, which is located at 9629 Hillcroft.
The store at 5406 Birdwood is called Golden Grain, and it is totally different from Russian General Store, and I do not know whether it is open or closed.
But Russian General Store is definitely the BEST Russian/European store in Houston.

The Russian General Store on Birdwood no longer exists.
The location on Birdwood is now called Golden Grain, it is also a Russian store and deli. They have the best prices in Houston on Russian groceries and the deli is clean and nice.
Food is great, Sveta (the owner) is very nice and it is family owned and operated.

Both locations of The Russian General Store are still open. They also have homemade food to go and excellent russian cheese, hard salami and whole grain peasant bread.

We have another restaurant/food store north of Houston in The Woodlands. Their website is http://www.moscow2houston.com/
