Perestroyka

by Masha on July 2, 2008

Perestroyka is a Russian supermarket in Leicester, UK. It’s a one stop shop for wine, champagne, traditional grocery items, and Russian food dishes. This place actually has a feel of Russian supermarkets in times of perestroika. It is highly recommended if you are craving for some good wine and pirozhki.

My Russian fiancée likes quails eggs. Do you know where we can get some from please. Can you also tell me some of the unique Russian foods you stock. Northampton is a long way from Deven , so we would not like to waste our journey!!

Many thanks

Hi Derek & Olga,

Not sure where you can get quails eggs… I’d recommend trying local farmers markets… Unique Russian foods I stock: buckwheat grain; Russian farmer’s cheese called tvorog (similar to cottage cheese, but different consictency); kolbasa (doctor’s or servelat types); kefir – a dairy drink; Russian marinated tomatoes and cucumbers; shprots; frozen foods – pelmeni, vareniki, blintzes; fried and salted sunflower seeds; cold smoked fish; Russian bread; pickled cabbage; desserts – baranki, batonchiki, pryaniki, zefir, and maybe some baked goods.

Also, I would recommend calling the store first to make sure they are open on the day you are going and to find out what time the close.

Hope this helps! And good luck with quail eggs ;)

Hi Margaret, I don’t personally sell red caviar. But you can go to mostly any Russian food store and buy it there.
