About

Why was this site created? Who needs it? Why even bother?

- To understand these questions you need to know a little about me first.

My name is Masha (no R), which is a Russian equivalent of a short form for ‘Maria’. I have moved to San Francisco bay area from Russia in 2002. I felt extremely nostalgic and the only thing that could cheer me up was the taste of the motherland in the form of Russian traditional food. I immediately encountered difficulties trying to locate the Russian food supermarkets and restaurants. If I only knew then what I know now, it would have saved me a lot of tears and sadness caused by unability to find my favorite dishes. Furthermore, whenever I travel I get homesick and I search for Russian restaurants everywhere I go. Hence the reason I have started gathering information about Russian food places and posting it here.

I have recently started expanding my reviews to Russian restaurants and grocery stores outside bay area. I welcome any comments, questions, or additions you might have to offer.

Never been there. But the lady from the store sells at the Redwood City Farmers Market on Saturday Mornings. The Russian pastries are delicious, though I can hardly pronounce them.

It’s really close to the San Carlos Caltrain station. I commute from there daily. I’ll have to drop by. I think it’s next to County Restaurant Supply.

Privet Masik,

I also moved to US about the same time you did, but for 6 years now live in Sacramento. There are no Russian places except for Stolichniy that I know of in this area, so please keep up the good work and if you hear about anything around Sacramento, please post it on your wonderful site! Many Thanks.

If you can add Salt Lake City UT to your list, I would like to praise Luybochka Cafe on 959 East 3300 South in downtown SLC. My review is at: http://www.russianmeetingplace.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=296&sort=1&cat=33

Hello Masha,

do you know where I can find russian wines in USA?

Alessandro,

Russian wines can be found in most Russian supermarkets. I would recommend Georgian wines though – Kindzmarauli and Khvanchkara are my favorite. You can also try the internet stores – moscowonthehudson.com and russianfooddirect.com

Hello Masha,

great blog you have here! I wish I could still live in the bay area. Remember me? I was one of the german guys how lived in the area in 2002/2003.
We should get back in touch.

Greetings Erik

If you make it back to the Washington, DC area, there’s a lovely cafe/restaurant in Arlington called Cafe Assorti which specializes in Russian cuisine. Half of it’s a bakery (they bake all day, not just in the morning), and the other half is a sit-down restaurant.

I took a friend there just after getting back from Moskva, and we were both very impressed with the offerings.
