European Deli

by Masha on January 5, 2011

A friend of mine recently told me about European Deli Russian food store in San Ramon. It opened in December 2009 and has gained recognition and good reputation among Russian population of East bay area and beyond. European Deli is conveniently located close to freeway in a little shopping center. It has an impressive collection of kolbasas (sausages) and cheeses as well as a multitude of other Russian traditional goodies. Here is an exert from their website:

“Welcome to to San Ramon’s best kept secret – European Deli. We went across Russia, Eastern and Western Europe searching for the finest meats, cheeses, breads, dairy and deserts you can find. Our shelves are full of uniquly delicios exeptionally fresh foods that only Europeans enjoyed.”

Russian Family Bistro

by Masha on January 27, 2010

A new Russian cuisine spot called Russian Family restaurant has recently opened in San Bruno, CA. It has a good family vibe and a friendly atmosphere. I would suggest trying the following Russian dishes from the menu: syrniki, kotletki and cabbage pirozhki.

Russian Family offers catering as well as full seat-down service, deli and bakery. The menu and store hours can be found on their website: http://www.russianfamily.net.

Update: Took my American, Honduran, and Russian friends from work to Russian Family Bistro last Friday for dinner. It was quite an experience! The owner was very nice and did not try speaking Russian to us at all. Usually owners of Russian restaurants prefer Russian language even if the guests are English speaking. We had some rassolnik, solyanka, bliny, kotlety s grechkoi, gulyazh, pirozhki, and olivie. All of the dishes were very tasty. Olivie could have had a little less mayo for my taste though, but still good. Kindzmarauli and hvanchkara wines complemented our dinner very well. Still, the main reason for the success of that event was the company, of course.

Gold International Bakery

by Masha on July 16, 2009

Thank you, Laura, for sending me a comprehensive list of Russian stores and restaurants in Detroit area! This was very helpful for my research. I have found some information on Gold International Bakery on Ten Mile. If you are looking for an authentic Russian treat – this is the place to check out. Gold International bakery always has the freshest pirozhki and plushki that could  not be left unmentioned. Stop by for an afternoon cup of tea with a bite of cabbage pie in the afternoon and, please, let me know what you thought!

Your opinion matters!

by Masha on July 30, 2008

Dear reader,

I have been writing my reviews for over 2 years now. I asked for your help in reviewing restaurants and adding new ones to my blog. There are, however, a few questions that I have not asked you yet:

  • Is there anything that I can do, in your opinion, to improve my reviews and help you in choosing a restaurant or a store to visit?
  • Is there any information that you would find helpful that I could add?
  • Do you like the way my website is organized? Could you suggest any improvements?
  • Do you have any information needs related to Russian food that are not yet fulfilled?

Please leave your feedback in comments to this post, or send me an email. Your help will be greatly appreciated and will help me to serve you better.

Regards,

Masha

Samovar Deli and Bakery

by Masha on November 14, 2007

Samovar is located at 1077 Independence Ave in Mountain View. It is a cozy deli cafe that usually has fresh bakery along with salads, traditional Russian foods such as buckwheat, bird’s milk candy, and pelmeni. The selection has greatly improved over the past year and definitely has great value. There is also the Russian Club bookstore/movie rental place in the same space. I find it very convenient – get some pirozhnye Kartoshka then rent a Russian movie that recently came out and maybe get a nice book to read.

Not that long ago Samovar started a catering service as well as “cooking on demand” – they will make fresh dishes upon request. There is also a new banquet room that is available on the weekends.

Piroshky Bakery

by Masha on January 4, 2007

Piroshky Bakery was recommended to me by a person who used to go to the same school as I did back in Russia. She currently lives in Seattle and says that Piroshky Bakery is her favorite food place. It has calming atmosphere and home-made tasting delights, it seems like the owners put their souls into this place. Piroshky Bakery has great reviews and a well-designed website: http://www.piroshkybakery.com/

Moscow & Tbilisi Bakery Store

by Masha on November 5, 2006

“I drive 50 miles from San Jose just to buy bread there” were the words of the person who recommended Moscow & Tbilisi Bakery Store to me. After hearing something like this I will most definitely go and check it out when I have a chance… For now, I have found a few most positive reviews of the place. Pictures look very promising as well. I heard poppy seed cookies and pies are the best. Moscow & Tbilisi Bakery Store is located in the heart of the Russian community of San Francisco on Geary St.
